Insuring the Uninsured is Simplistic
Allow Working Uninsured to Join U.S. Govermental Insurance Plans
Presidential Candidates agree as members of the House and Senate, they have the best insurance coverage available. This great coverage is also extended to governmental employees. Yet they appear preplexed as to how to insure the working uninsured.
The solution is simple. Allow those working uninusred who wish to do so, to join the governmental employees insurance program.
As a former local and federal government employee, I will tell you there is a wide assortment of plans to choose from. The costs vary but are affordable.
It would not take long or a major effort to make such a change. The costs would come from the participants paycheck in the same manner other deductions are made.
You may wonder what would prevent an employer from droping their insurance plan and forcing employees into the government plan. Very simply if an employer was providing insurance as of January 2008 they would be charged a substantial surcharge.
Most imporantly this would actually reduce the costs of government employees insurance because of the large number of participants.
Allow Insured Retirees to Remain in their Insurance Plans
Currently retired persons who reach 65 are required to sign up for Medicare. Even if the person has insurance through their job. This makes no sense. It places a financial burden on the government which should remain with business.
If a persons has worked and obtained pension status, they should be allowed to keep their private insurance and buy Medicare only a backup plan for costs which exceed the insurance plan's limits.
The argument this would raise insurance premiums is without merit as most of the Medicare plans are from major insurance companies.
Duplicate Insurance Plans Provided to Government and Other Major Companies for the Uninsured
When a person is not insured, the costs of their medical treatment, especially emergency treatment, is often passed on to the taxpayer.
The cost of insuring an unemployed uninsured person should be no greater than that of insuring a governmental employee.
Remember insurance plans for the uninsured are often managed by major insurance companies.
Allow Insured Persons to Add One Non-Conforming Person to Their Insurance Plan.
There are several major insurance plans which allow the addition of domestic partners. However these same companies do not allow for the additonal of a non-conforming person even if the insured is willing to pay the additional cost.
This may appear to be a minor issue however, if allowed thousands of uninsured would become insured at absolutely no cost to the government. It could also remove thousands of children from government sponseored.
This would allow relatives to add a family member, child or other person to their policy and pay the difference.
